Replacing Door Bells
Of the many things in your home that need to be replaced, one would think the doorbell would be low on the list of areas where you might have trouble. But there are some good reasons that you might have on your "honey do" list to replace the front door bell. Those reasons might include…
. You want a new doorbell chime that is more up to date or has more personality than the one you are using.
. You want something that looks more modern and in keeping with your decorating scheme in both the doorbell chime box on the wall and the doorbell housing on the porch.
. You want to go wireless to give you more flexibility in how you can use your doorbell.
. The old one broke.
Yes, it is true that a doorbell system can break. After all, doorbells do carry a small charge of electricity. So the diodes and other electronic parts either in the button mechanism at the door or in the chime box in the house could simply corrode or otherwise stop functioning. Also that front doorbell button is a moving part that gets pushed dozens a times a week. And like any mechanism with moving parts, things can break with that much use.
A doorbell is such a simple mechanism that the option of repairing the old doorbell seems like excess work. If you bought a complete new doorbell system including the chimes and the button mechanism, the cost would be low by any measure. And the ease of installation of a new doorbell compared to taking the old mechanisms apart to effect an repair tells us that it is better use of your time and money simply to replace the worn out unit.
The replacement process is just consists of dropping the power to the doorbell and taking down the old unit and attaching the new one. There are only two units to swap out, the button at the front door and the chimes box. Both will attach to the internal wiring by color-coded wires. Simply follow the pattern of how the old one was hooked up and attach the new one the same way and you are all set.
But the opportunity to replace the old doorbell system also gives you the chance to install a new wireless system instead. The only difference is that you do not use the old wiring system. The front doorbell button operation and the chimes box may be powered by small batteries that you might have to look after. But the installation is very easy and because the chimes box is not tied to the house wiring, you can move it around wherever you want it to be. So one day your doorbell might ring in the living room, in the bedroom the next or out in the garage the next if you are out there spending the day cleaning up or working on the car.
Wireless systems also open up a huge variety of ways you can customize the chimes and have some fun with your doorbell system. So think about going that route because the cost is not that much more and wireless doorbells give you many more options than the old fashioned doorbells.
